This week, the old Banner Elk Hospital—once a cornerstone of healthcare in our mountain community—is being torn down. Located just off Shawneehaw Avenue, the building has stood as a silent witness to decades of change in the High Country. Its weathered facade and crumbling brick have long reminded locals of a different era—one filled with house calls, hometown doctors, and a tight-knit approach to rural medicine. Built in the early 20th century, the hospital served generations of Avery County residents. For many families, it’s where babies were born, broken bones were set, and loved ones were cared for. Long after its closure, the building remained a symbol of Banner Elk’s past—stirring memories for those who walked its halls or watched their children take their first breaths within its walls.
